Sip & Guzzle
Sip & Guzzle is the New York sibling of SG Club in Tokyo, and two bars in one building on Cornelia Street, in the old Cornelia Street Cafe. It opened in January 2024. Downstairs, Sip belongs to Shingo Gokan, who ran the bar at Angel's Share for a decade before opening eight bars across Japan and China. Upstairs, Guzzle is Steve Schneider's, back in New York after running Employees Only in Singapore. The two first opened together in Shanghai in 2018, with a bar called the Odd Couple.
The rooms are different eras. Sip is dressed like an Edo-period ship, a nod to the Kanrin Maru's 1860 voyage to America, all distressed oak and concrete. Guzzle is a New York saloon of the same years, with old brick, millwork and pop art, including a kimono-clad David Bowie. The food is by Mike Bagale, formerly executive chef at Alinea.
Upstairs it is classics, highballs and an Apple Manhattan with bacon-infused rye.
Downstairs, the drinks are inventive: the Wax On, with shochu, coconut yogurt, fig leaf and Japanese wax, or a whisky nigiri with sushi vinegar, sake and wasabi. Upstairs it is classics, highballs and an Apple Manhattan with bacon-infused rye.
Tables open ten days ahead, at midnight. It is a very good place to end a night, and a better one to start an evening you want people to remember.
